Get Licensed, Get Legal is more than just a catchy phrase in a safety campaign, it could save your life.
The Hurt Study (the largest study of motorcycle crashes ever conducted) found that only 54.5% of the crashes studied involved riders that were properly licensed and went on to conclude "motorcycle riders in these accidents were significantly without motorcycle license, without any license or with license revoked". More recently, the 2008 Crash Facts published by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute revealed that that 50% of the riders killed in Indiana did not have the proper license to operate a motorcycle. Only 50.9% of the riders involved in all crashes had a motorcycle endorsement.
Hurt also discovered that 92% of the accident involved riders were self taught, meaning they had not received the benefit of a formal rider education program. Inasmuch as we have seen increases in single-vehicle crashes involving motorcycles, especially riders running wide in turns, this seems to point toward operator error or inexperience. Recent reports from the insurance industry reinforce Hurt's finding that motorcyclists are most likely to be involved in a crash in the first few months of riding.
Looking at it simply from the financial aspect, even a minor incident on a motorcycle can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. This combined with an up to $500 fine for operating without a motorcycle endorsement should clearly demonstrate the benefits of being properly licensed and trained. Your riding will be safer, more enjoyable and a better bargain.
Obtaining your motorcycle endorsement is not difficult, and enrolling in a rider course has never been easier. Full details regarding the steps on how, when and where you can take a motorcycle rider course or skills examination are listed below.
